Are Da’ Bears this desperate?
Here is the introduction to a weekly Chicago Bears email:
Contrary to popular belief, pride is important to professional
athletes. No one wants to lose and no one wants the dubious
distinction of playing for the worst team.
Losing makes it hard to face your peers, let alone negotiate
contract extensions.
But the Bears need to borrow a page from the pamphlet-sized Jerry
Krause Manual of Success and just forget it. Play for a draft pick.
They’re sitting on the crowded bottom step of the cellar stairs,
along with the expansion Houston Texans and every other team from
their division not from Green Bay.
If it weren’t for the Cincinnati Bengals, the Los Angeles Clippers
of the NFL, Bears management and coaches–those who will be around
next season, that is–could start dreaming of USC’s Carson Palmer
or Marshall’s Byron Leftwich.
In case you’re wondering about tie- breakers and draft order,
they’re settled by strength of schedule. Of the four current 3-9
teams, the Bears had the best 2001 record, which means they had the
toughest 2002 schedule, which means if the draft were tomorrow, the
Bears would pick second.
Who knows? Maybe Cincinnati can make a late run and pull out wins
against Carolina and Jacksonville in the next two weeks.
Or the more likely scenario: The Bengals will continue to lose and,
as they’ve been known to do, use the top pick on the wrong
quarterback, thereby leaving Jerry Angelo to snatch the other guy,
whether it be Palmer or Leftwich.
Yes, pride is important, but let’s just set it aside for a bit and
concentrate on getting a franchise quarterback.
Ouch! Is this what it has come to Spud?

LOL! I remember at the start of the season when Spud was talking smack but I don’t hear much now!
And I don’t hear too much from Sarge about the Deadskins either!!?! Sometimes a team has to pay for their good luck, and the bill from last year is getting paid off now.
I don’t think the Bears will do things on purpose to improve their draft order, but things don’t look good with Miami, NYJ and Tampa coming up. Carolina looked like a possible W, but they seemed to have woken up.
The Bears just got burned a few years ago by drafting a QB in the first round, McNown, and before that wasted another high pick on Mirer (aaarrrgggh). You never know what you get from a high draft pick QB. Kind of like Mystery Date - is he a dream, or a dud?!? How many teams wanted Ryan Leaf a few years ago? As far as I can tell, the last Pro-Bowl quality QB for the Bears was Red Grange (was Johnny Lujack after him?), and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. Maybe Palmer will be available, though.
