This is depressing news. Ward absent as camp opens:

As of Sunday’s 6 p.m. deadline, 85 Steelers players had reported to St. Vincent College for the start of this training camp, but Ward was not among them. The four-time Pro Bowl receiver who has one year remaining on a contract he signed in 2001 had said earlier in the week that he would not report to training camp unless an extension was worked out with the team, and when it wasn’t he didn’t.

I love Hines Ward. The guy has been nails. He is a huge part of why the Steelers have had success. But the fact is if he wants to be a big money reciever he will have to go elsehwere. The Steelers are willing to make him the highest paid player in franchise history, but the Steelers are not a big money team. And they can’t afford to lock up so much money and cap room with one player. In the past a number of high quality players have left because of money. It is just a fact of life.

I sincerly hope the two sides can come togeher and work something out. Ward, however, should be in camp. He owes the Steelers that much.
