George Mason the giant killer

| | Comments (1)

Well, another year another ugly NCAA tourney bracket. With George Mason's upset over Connecticut my bracket destruction is complete. I went 50% on my final four but the two teams I had in the final (Duke and UConn) have now lost. Yes, it is probably the greatest upset in the history of the tournament, but that won't change the fact that I once again failed to compete in the annual bracket fest. I have failed bracketology once again.

Perhaps, I actually watched NCAA basketball during the year I would do a better job picking these things. But then again I am not sure that would have helped me with George Mason. Besides GMU North Carolina and Kansas caused a lot of damage. It seems like those teams either win it all or lose in the first round. Oh well, there is always next year.

Most post game press conferences amount to little beyond emotion and media inquisition. But ESPN'S broadcast featuring George Mason was different. (I still don't know where the school is located; was Mason an important figure associated with Washington?) Jim Larranaga is a treat. You will see his quote from WJenningsBryan repeated on ESPN (Bryan's name omitted, of course!). The coach was a talking textbook, if at times selfserving. He's one way to see inside the game. I'll pay to listen to him anytime. (No, he didn't lay claim to 'Connecticut Assassin Association.' ) Billy Donovan's ESPN interview later seemed calculated PR in comparison.
My favorite quote was from the Florida player (Y.Noah's son?) who dismissed one media question with 'Hey, our heads would explode if we worried about all the questions you guys do!"
Well put!
