Some Good News out of Ohio
In case you haven't been paying attention, things did not go well for the GOP in Ohio last night. I won't go over the gory details again, but in my district Republicans lost at every level from governor on down to county commissioner. Dark days.
There are, however, a few bright spots. Click below for the details.
- Supreme Court candidates Justice Terrence O’Donnell and appellate Judge Robert R. Cupp both won giving Republicans all seven seats. I think we all know how important the courts are so this is an important victory.
- In a surprise win, State Representative Mary Taylor won the race for State Auditor and thus prevented a Democratic sweep of statewide offices.
- The GOP retained control of the Ohio Senate, losing only one seat. This means Republicans will have a solid 21-12 majority.
- In such a daunting environment there were concerns that control of the Ohio House might be in question. But it appears the Republicans have held on to control there as well. Based on unofficial results it looks like the GOP will have a 53-46 majority after a net seven seats lost.
- Last but not least, it appears that Deb Pryce will hold on to her House seat narrowly beating out Mary Jo Kilroy with absentee ballots still to be counted.
As on the national level, the Ohio GOP will need to re-evaluate and regroup. But at least the above victories means there is a strong foundation on which to build and a voice in public policy going forward.

Strickland and a Republican legislature can't be much worse than Taft and a Republican legislature. He seems to be more reasonable than many of your congressional delegation; they could have nominated Dennis the Menace and he would have won.
We've had roughly the same situation here in Michigan for the last four years, and things ran fairly smoothly. No conservative's dream, but Granholm and a Republican legislature work out a livable budget. We're stuck with that for another four years, with a Democratic state house thrown in for the next two years at least.
