I don't understand Google
Practically since I have been blogging - well, at least since I have been blogging on my own domain - I have experienced these weird fluctuations in Google search engine referrals. Traffic will drop and then suddenly jump without any explanation from a specific link, etc.
It happened on the old Collected Miscellany site and I don't even post there. So it seems to me it has to be connected to to Google since it drive the majority of the blogs traffic.
Below the fold are some charts that illustrate this phenomenon.
Here are the stats from the last 30 days for the current blog. You can see they are steady and predictable for the most part.
Now here are the stats from the old blog domain. See how the suddenly take a jump? There is no explanation; no link to explain the traffic except an increase from Google searches.
Weird.

Our blog goes through this kind of thing now and then. Like, the last few days our hits have jumped up 70 more for no discernible reason...until, that is, I checked the referrals. Turns out one of the pictures John posted (of Keith Richards) kept coming up in people's Google image searches. Every time someone took a look at the pic, we had another hit. This happened before, and more intensely, with another John picture, of Nicole Simpson Brown. Check your referrals, see how people are getting here. If you see "images.google.com" a lot, then that's it.
