Michelle Cottle in The New Republic Online discusses a new idea to keep kids away from online smut. In the article she offers this great paragraph (warning: adult subject):
I agree that the concept of a congressional mandate to stop online porn has a certain appeal. Talk of voluntary rules or restrictions sounds a bit limp when we're discussing how to keep second-graders off a site hawking Horny Housewives Jell-O Wrestling With Double-Dicked Dwarfs. But the harsh reality is that, any time we start toying with the idea of compelling pornographers to do much of anything, the ACLU gets all agitated and starts squawking about "constitutional this" and "First Amendment that." The porn industry has a lot of money with which to hire a lot of lawyers, and before you know it, you have Larry Flynt wrapping himself in the American flag and screeching about his God-given right to watch girl-on-girl action from the privacy of his home computer. No one wants to see that.
Sad, but all too true.
Geraldo News Flash
This just in - Geraldo is an idiot. Or to quote the ubiquitous and ever useful InstaPundit (on another subject) he is "so absolutely, unrelievedly, stone-cold dumb."
Worst Column of the Year?! - A nomination
Want to know why midwesterners see San Francisco (and California in general) as the on-ramp to the apocalypse? Check out this column. This person actually uses a first person letter from Jesus Christ to President Bush as a vehicle to critique the war effort! She, using the voice of Jesus!, writes "Since Sept. 11, dear brother, I have noticed that you have turned away from me." I shudder when I think of the ignorance and shear idiocy that must have went into this column. Are there no editors with sense at the SF Chronicle? Is this woman so far removed from common sense, decency, and taste that she would pull this? Unbelievable!
Thanks to fellow blogger Aintnobaddude for the tip.
BS at TNR
What did I tell you about TNR - some great work mixed with pieces that make steam come out your ears. Well, Check out this re-run hit job on Reagan. A series of spoof Christmas carols etc. all aimed at Reagan but with an overt strike at the current president. The Ed. note starts out "Two decades before the current oil-addicted, corporation-coddling administration came to power" and ends with "The fact that these charges apply just as well today as they did 20 years ago would be funny if it weren't so sad." What a bunch of cow patties! It is sad that TNR has to resort to name calling and bad satire to attack the Gipper. The liberals want it both ways. They blame Reagan for devastating the poor and running deficits but the sad truth is that all the money spent on the military was well worth it (the end of the cold war is what allowed Clinton to save all those military dollars and the economy then pushed us out of deficit) but Reagan did not slash spending on social programs (how could he with a D controlled House?). These tired jabs about Reagan's putting the poor over a barrel is bull. But the left never gets tired of it - if you say it enough it must be true. sad.
